I was curious about Rome.
There's more to Italy than Rome, but I was curious about this other old civilization that fought the Greeks and in the past ruled so much of the world. My dad taught me about Roman history and we set out to see a lot of monuments.
There are also many fountains and churches and it seems like there are restaurants everywhere and people are always eating!
"Dad, here, the streets are the sidewalks, right? Why are the cars driving on the sidewalk?"
All the streets were narrow and made with cobblestone and restaurant tables were set in the middle of the road. Sometimes cars drove right by our table, but no one seemed to mind!
It's a good thing there were lots of restaurants because I love pasta, pizza and meatballs, and even though they have lots of other things, and we had some, those were my favorite. My mom says the quality of the food here is always very good. People that live here know where the really good places are, however, food is always great everywhere.
"Here they have the biggest pepperoni slices. Where we live the slices are the smallest."
My dad had a surprise for me that involved pasta, but I had to wait for tomorrow... I was very excited.
Later that day we visited the Colosseum, where I learned about the 'games' and gladiators.
"But how did they fight, dad?"
"And is that where the lions came out of?"
The Colosseum was great, but where I had most fun and learned the most was when we visited a Roman heritage cultural group that taught us all about ancient history, the 'games', and gladiators, multiple wars that the Roman army fought, and much more.
We even dressed like gladiators and had fun pretend fighting!
"Mom, did you know that despite what you see in the movies, gladiators weren't always fighting to death? It was for entertainment. Sometimes they died, but not all the time."
I made a lot of friends and won my 'freedom' and became a citizen of Rome!
It was hot and we had walked a lot that day. We ended the afternoon having a snack with a beautiful view of Rome.
