Whenever we do a big trip like this, not every day is packed with activities. Today was a relaxing day.
We were able to pack for the big trip without checking in luggage. My mom is a master at packing. All we have is 2 carry-ons, and 1 backpack each, and everyone pulls their own weight. This is cool because we don't spend time waiting for the luggage at the airport, but it means that sometimes we have to do laundry.
Luckily here in Kyoto, they have these cool laundromats with a cafe attached to them, so we can sit down and have a drink and a snack while we wait.
After that we went to Kyoto's kitchen - Nishiki market - and had lunch. It's a great place to try out new local food.
They had baby octopus on a stick, and the octopus had a quail egg in it's head - Tako tamago. It was delicious!
"I want that one!"
After that we went back to the hotel and started packing. You could tell my mom was sad to leave. She loves Japan! She says everything is cute and everyone is nice and respectful, and that things are well organized and efficient, and that even their trucks are cute!
Right before dinner, my parents were talking about this dish we hadn't had yet, and this restaurant where they went last time they were here. They always talk about these 2 amazing old women they met, that cooked Okonomiyaki for them. My mom was pregnant with me at the time, and they say that that night, they cooked just for them, and even, gave them a sake set, and some special chopsticks we have. Their place no longer exists. We still had Okonomiyaki that night, but my dad was sad he didn't get to see them again...
Even though it was hot and we walked a lot, we were pretty happy here! This became one of my favorite places to visit too... but now we're off to Thailand!
