Portugal, home of 'El-Rei D. João II!'

Updated: Aug 22, 2023

Our trip was soon coming to an end, but not yet... not yet!

I was excited to see grandpa and grandma, and to meet more of my family. I have been to Portugal once before, but I can't remember very well. I was a baby back then. Now, I'm a big kid, I remember stuff. That's why we're doing the Big Trip now.

"Why? Dad, why don't we have much time?"

I only got to see Lisbon from above this time. My dad says that Lisbon is a beautiful city full of history and culture, but that he 'wouldn't forgive himself' if we were to show us Lisbon and not be able to visit Coimbra, so we decided to see other places in Portugal.

Lisbon and Coimbra will have to wait, but we're already planning various trips after this one... so I'm sure we'll explore this part of the world soon enough!

By the time we arrived in Ericeira it was night time.

My grandparents' house is like a museum of memories from their world trips. Everywhere they go they get something to put on their walls and my grandma is always saying how she's running out of room but that it's a 'good problem to have'. There was so much to see... sometimes I felt I was traveling somewhere as she always describe their trips in great detail!

The next morning we went out for breakfast and my dad got everything they had! He traveled to so many places and loves everything the world has to offer, but he says he's still to find pastries like the ones they have in Portugal.

"Dad, this is not a breakfast place. This only has coffee and pastries."

"Hmm wait... this is the best breakfast ever!"

I ate so much that morning, that my grandpa asked if my parents hadn't given me any food during the Big Trip. It was very funny and we all laughed.

In Portugal, food is a very important part of the culture, and Ericeira is a fisherman's village so there's always fresh sea food to eat.

"I want that one. It's alive. We're going to eat that one!"

Seafood in Portugal is amazing! I tried many new foods here, some I can't even pronounce... That 'little worm' there... that one is one of my dad's favorites, and now it's one of my favorites! It's called 'Percebes', and my grandpa used to catch them himself when he was younger.

"It tastes like the ocean, dad!"

The weather was starting to open up so we decided to go change so we could to go to the beach. On the way to the beach we got to see the village, and my dad showed us places he used to go to when he was a teenager.

It was time to go to the beach!

In Ericeira, everybody surfs, and even though the water is cold, there's always people at the beach.

By the time we were done, grandpa bought everyone a round of ice cream and it was amazing!

It was time to go home. Tomorrow, we'd have family over.
